Recovery and Growth: Your Journey, Your Way

Recovery is often spoken about as a beginning, a steady climb, and a clear destination. But anyone who has lived it knows the truth: recovery is not a straight line.

There are steps forward and moments where it feels like you’ve gone backwards. There are periods of clarity and periods of doubt. This doesn’t mean you are failing. It means you are human!

After nine years in my own recovery and working alongside people affected by gambling harm through Reframe Coaching, one thing has become very clear to me: recovery and growth are deeply personal experiences.

Recovery isn’t linear and that’s okay

There will be days where you feel strong, grounded, and hopeful. There may also be days when old thoughts resurface, when confidence dips, or when life feels overwhelming again. These moments do not erase your progress.

Recovery is not about perfection. It’s about learning, adapting, and continuing even when the path feels uneven.

Sometimes growth looks like big, visible change. Other times, it looks like simply staying present, reaching out, or choosing not to act on an old impulse. All of this counts and is progress.

Growth is personal NOT a competition

I’ve found one of the most damaging things we can do in recovery is compare ourselves to others.

You might look at someone else and think they are “further along,” coping better, or moving faster. But you don’t know what’s beneath the surface, just as they don’t know what beneath yours. Everyone brings different experiences, different challenges, and different support needs into recovery.

Your recovery is not behind or ahead of anyone else’s, it is exactly where it needs to be for you.

Personal growth should not always be measured by time, milestones, or how things look from the outside. It can also be measured by honesty, self-awareness, and the effort you are making to look after yourself today!
